  • Guided reading

At Lansdowne students learn to read through developing phonic skills and reading for meaning.  All students in Key Stage 3 engage with Guided Reading daily.  The school uses the Little Wandle phonics scheme.

Students in the comprehension/reading for meaning groups have completed the phonics programme and need to develop fluency and understanding.  This is achieved through reading and discussing a text to gain understanding, completing a text review, a cloze procedure relating to the text and answering comprehension questions.  In this way students develop vocabulary and learn to independently use a dictionary to understand the meaning of a word and to use that word in context.

We offer a wide range of high quality texts, which include:

    • Clockwork
    • Eagle Warrior
    • Fing
    • Fudge-A-Mania
    • Mr Stink
    • The Ice Monster
    • The Sheen Pig
    • The Witches
    • Tiny but Lucky
    • War Horse

Each text caters for a different range of reading ability.

In Year 11, 12 and 13 students use their communication, reading and writing  skills to become familiar with the world around them using either Picture or First News to show an understanding of current news stories.
