We encourage our young people to develop writing skills through speaking & listening, reading and writing by accessing a range of media from Year 7 to Year 13.  Students develop communication, comprehension and composition skills over time through thinking about what they are going to say, drafting and revising their writing, as well as expanding their vocabulary, grammar and punctuation knowledge.  They are encouraged to practice letter formation and presentation.  Phonic skills taught in Guided Reading are re-enforced across the English Curriculum, to support spelling skills and the ability to independently use a dictionary.

Students are given the opportunity to explore, form and communicate ideas through oracy across the English curriculum, so they learn to express themselves well.  In this way students will have the vocabulary to say what they want to say and structure their thoughts so they are making sense to others.  This is achieved through paired and group discussion with peers or facilitated by the teacher.

Students build their knowledge of a range texts across Key Stage 3, which enables them to access national accreditation in Key Stages 4 and 5.  The English curriculum supports students towards independent skills and an opportunity to develop a life-long leisure pursuit.
